It’s hard to think about planning for rising healthcare costs as our family ages, but plan we must if we want to ensure that our loved ones get the best value possible for aging well. Two quality referrals are very important to ensure wise navigation through waters that many of us must face as we (and our parents) grow older. The first is an estate planning attorney, who knows how to best protect family assets, and make life savings last as long as possible. If assets run out, they can help people prepare for possible Medicaid transition up to a year or more in advance. Unless a patient is completely out of private funds, it is usually NOT a good idea to have a nursing home help with Medicaid applications for a variety of reasons.

The second professional needed in complex care management situations is a private professional patient advocate. Private advocates are often nurses who know how to deal with hospitals, care providers, and insurance companies in a professional manner, always keeping the patient at the center of the healthcare system and in the driver’s seat. Modern healthcare and the expenses it brings are often confusing and frightening to our aging population. With the right people on our team, patient rights and finances can be protected and bring with it greater peace of mind for all concerned!

With over 36 years of clinical experience in Critical Care nursing, home based health care and expertise as a cardiovascular nurse clinician, Teri is well acquainted with the complexities of the modern healthcare system. She has served as a nursing leader, mentor, educator, and consistent patient advocate throughout her career in some of the best hospitals across the country. Her passion to keep the patient at the center of the model of nursing care led her to incorporate NShore Patient Advocates, LLC in 2011, serving clients throughout the northern suburbs of Chicago.
