Safe sex never goes out of style

Valentine’s Day is right around corner, and while we’re all for spreading the love, we want it spread safely. Practicing safe sex is important no matter what your age. With the growth rate of seniors skyrocketing, safe sex is more important than ever! Unfortunately, senior citizens are at a higher risk than other adults for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Here are some tips for keeping it clean and protecting yourself.

Communication is key

The first step in protecting your health is to talk to your partner(s). Just like junior high, you want to know if they person you’re kissing has been kissing someone else. Talk to your partner and be open and upfront. If you’re not exclusive, condom use is essential. In fact, even if you are exclusive, condoms are still important for protecting health. The point is simple. Talk to your partner, and know who you’re getting in bed with. If your partner has a history of STIs, you should know.

Talking to your partner is essential, but they’re not the only person you should be talking to.

Bring on the consult

Don’t keep your doctor in the dark! Doctors are the best resource we have for staying healthy, in and out of the bedroom. They can help educate, advise, and treat any existing condition (like ED or dryness). Even if it feels a little awkward, talk to your doc, and Dr. Google doesn’t count!

Come prepared

We can’t overstate the importance of using protection like condoms, but they’re not the only extra to bring to the bedroom. Lubricants can be your best friend. They lower the chances of getting a sore or small cut, making you both safer and more satisfied.

And as always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your RN patient advocates with any questions!
