iPhone users, have you had a chance to update to IOS 8 yet?

If not, you are missing out on a valuable tool that can actually save lives. The new smart phone health and medical information app includes a handy way to store your correct, up to date health conditions, medication and allergy list and provider contact information in case you should suddenly become unable to give a reliable health history to medical personnel.

Paramedics and other first responders are trained on how to quickly access critically needed information that could save time and even your life. For people over the age of 65 or those who have medical conditions that could render them suddenly unconscious, this new technology is a must.

Another exciting new medical product is the new computerized medication storage and administration lock box for people prone to be forgetful about taking their meds. These high tech delivery systems unlock with voice reminders at up to four different times daily. If the medicine is not removed and the compartment relocked, a reminder can be sent to family members to alert them that a phone call to check on their loved ones may be necessary. Alternatively, the local home care agency that sends a caregiver will send someone to check on grandpa to make certain all is well.

Please note: I am not endorsing any specific app or product. I only want to provide you with some examples of the different technology available today. Please comment below with any new app or device that you find helpful as well!

With over 36 years of clinical experience in Critical Care nursing, home based health care and expertise as a cardiovascular nurse clinician, Teri is well acquainted with the complexities of the modern healthcare system. She has served as a nursing leader, mentor, educator, and consistent patient advocate throughout her career in some of the best hospitals across the country. Her passion to keep the patient at the center of the model of nursing care led her to incorporate NShore Patient Advocates, LLC in 2011, serving clients throughout the northern suburbs of Chicago.
